Department of Development Announces New Insulation Recommendations for Weatherization Programs

Spray Polyurethane Foam Gains Ground in Ohio

NORTON, Ohio (October 2011) – The Ohio Department of Development has issued new standards effective September 1, 2011, for all Home Weatherization Assistance Program (HWAP) Energy Coordinators for the weatherization process for band boards, also referred to as a rim joist or sill box.

Installing fiberglass batts or duct wrap in the band board is no longer an acceptable method of insulating. Contractors must employ one of the following methods:

·         Install rigid insulation board in the band board and seal edges with caulk or foam such as Handi-Foam® Sealants, designed to seal and fill small cracks, gaps and voids, and  available in a variety of sizes to meet many application needs.

or

·         Spray the band board with a polyurethane foam product such as low pressure Handi-Foam® spray polyurethane foam.

For more information on band board specifications, contact your Ohio Department of Development technical field monitor.
