New Ignition Barrier Product Meets Latest Building Code Requirements

NORTON, Ohio – March 22, 2011
– As of February 2011, updated requirements about the use of low pressure spray polyurethane foam (SPF) used in crawl spaces and attics come into action: an ignition barrier coating must be applied to all exposed foam surfaces in the attic or crawl space in order to be in compliance under applicable sections of the International Building Code (IBC) and International Residential Code (IRC). As a means of meeting these most recent requirements, Fomo Products, Inc., announces the launch of its newest product: Handi-Foam® Ignition Barrier.

Fomo’s Handi-Foam Ignition Barrier is a white, latex-based intumescent reactant. It can be sprayed to coat the surface of Handi-Foam® E84 Class 1 spray foam, where it will react to fire by creating a carbon layer and removing fuel from the fire, not allowing the fire to ignite or delaying the progress of the fire to allow inhabitants to exit the building. After application, the product will be dry to the touch within 20 minutes in a regularly ventilated area; it requires one hour to completely dry; and it has no additional re-entry regulations, as its compounds are non-toxic, non-carcinogens with low VOCs.

“It’s important for Fomo to supply its customers with the products and resources they need to stay in line with industry updates, and introducing Handi-Foam Ignition Barrier is one more way to keep up with IBC and IRC requirements,” said Sara Jonas, senior manager – marketing, Fomo Products, Inc. “This new product offering is also in line with Fomo’s commitment to safety, through our product offering, safety guidelines, and technical support.”

With a lower wet mil thickness requirement than many other coating products, Handi-Foam Ignition Barrier is effective at less cost per square foot, making it a competitive solution for end users. It also contains non-toxic components with low VOCs that meet green classifications and can be credited for LEED points under indoor air quality, innovation in design, materials reuse and construction waste management. Minimal personal protective equipment (PPE) is required when working with Handi-Foam Ignition Barrier.

Handi-Foam Ignition Barrier is a single-part system that can be applied with airless spray equipment. It maintains a three-year shelf life, and the product can be tinted at up to two ounces of tint per gallon of Handi-Foam Ignition Barrier.
