Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)
The Leadership in Environmental Energy and Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System™ is a nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings. LEED encourages and accelerates global adoption of sustainable green building and development practices through the creation and implementation of universally understood and accepted tools and performance criteria.
Individual products cannot be “LEED certified” or cannot give you LEED points. Individual products can however, contribute to points under the rating system. Products fall into two categories, Contribution Credits or Compliance Credits. Contribution Credits are a calculation to determine what % of the whole project’s materials meets the requirements in the LEED Rating System. Compliance Credits require that all related materials meet a certain requirement set forth by the standard. Handi-Foam®, Handi-Flow®, Handi-Stick® and Handi-Seal® spray foam, sealants and adhesives can contribute to LEED points in various categories, including the following. Please refer to the product Technical Data Sheet for more detailed information about the contribution from the specific product being used:
Energy and Atmosphere (EA):
´ EA Prerequisite 2 – Minimum Energy Performance
o Establish the minimum level of energy efficiency which comply with ASHRAE/IESNA Standard 90.1-2004 or local codes which meet the U.S Department of Energy commercial energy code determination for the proposed building and systems
Handi-Foam®, Handi-Flow®, Handi-Stick® and Handi-Seal® spray foam, sealants and adhesives exceed these requirements by stopping unwanted air infiltration, reducing heating and cooling costs and providing energy efficient construction.
´ EA Credit 1 – Optimize Energy Performance (1-10 points)
o Achieve increasing levels of energy performance by reducing environmental and economic impacts associated with excessive energy use
Handi-Foam®, Handi-Flow®, Handi-Stick® and Handi-Seal® spray foam, sealants and adhesives are the most effective unifying components for the completion of a superior air barrier and high R-Values within the building envelope due to their ability to expand, bond and seal. Energy usage is dramatically reduced by stopping unwanted air infiltration.
Materials and Resources (MR):
´ MR Credit 2 – Construction Waste Management (1-2 points)
o Divert construction and demolition debris from disposal in landfills and incinerators. Redirect recyclable items back to the manufacturing process and redirect reusable materials to appropriate sites
Handi-Foam®, Handi-Flow®, Handi-Stick® and Handi-Seal® spray foam, sealants and adhesives expand and seal any shape without trimming which results in no waste. Handi-Foam® and Handi-Flow® Refill and Dispensing Systems are completely reusable thus contributing 0% to landfills.
´ MR Credit 4 – Recycled Content (1-2 points)
o Increase demand for building products that incorporate recycled content materials such that the sum of post-consumer recycled content plus one-half of pre-consumer content equals at least 10% based on cost of the total project. Post-consumer is defined as waste material generated by households or by commercial, industrial and institutional facilities in their role as end-users of the product, which can no longer be used for its intended use. Pre-consumer is defined as material diverted from the waste stream during the manufacturing process
Handi-Foam®, Handi-Flow®, Handi-Stick® and Handi-Seal® spray foam, sealants and adhesives contain chemicals and packaging which comply with post-consumer and/or pre-consumer recycled content materials
´ MR Credit 5 – Local/Regional Materials (1-2 points)
o Use of building materials that are manufactured within a 500 mile radius of the project site
Handi-Foam®, Handi-Flow®, Handi-Stick® and Handi-Seal® spray foam, sealants and adhesives are manufactured in Norton and/or Akron, Ohio
´ MR Credit 6 - Rapidly Renewable Materials (1 point)
o Use rapidly renewable building materials and products made from plants harvested within a ten year cycle or shorter
Handi-Foam® Eco-Foam sealants are manufactured with rapidly renewable soy products
Indoor Environmental Quality (EQ):
´ EQ Credit 4 - Low emitting materials – Adhesives and Sealants (1 point)
o Reduce the quantity of indoor air contaminants that are odorous, potentially irritating and/or harmful to the comfort and well being of installers and occupants
Handi-Foam®, Handi-Flow®, Handi-Stick® and Handi-Seal® spray foam, sealants and adhesives contain no Formaldehyde, CFC’s or HCFC’s. Handi-Foam® 40 Series, Handi-Flow®, Handi-Stick® and Handi-Seal® spray foam, sealants and adhesives contain zero VOC while Handi-Foam® HC contains low VOC
´ EQ Credit 7 – Thermal Comfort (1 point)
o Provide a comfortable thermal environment that supports the productivity and well being of building occupants
Handi-Foam®, Handi-Flow®, Handi-Stick® and Handi-Seal® spray foam, sealants and adhesives are the most effective unifying components for the completion of a superior air barrier, vapor barrier and insulator within the building envelope. Energy usage is dramatically reduced by stopping unwanted air infiltration thus contributing to the downsizing of the HVAC equipment.
Innovation & Design Process (ID):
´ ID Credit 1 – Innovation in Design (1-4 points)
o Designs which exceed the requirements set by LEED Green Building Rating System for energy performance that demonstrate a comprehensive approach and quantifiable environment and/or health benefits
Handi-Foam®, Handi-Flow®, Handi-Stick® and Handi-Seal® spray foam, sealants and adhesives are the most effective unifying components for the completion of a superior air barrier within the building envelope while controlling sound, mold growth, decay and deterioration to create a durable, healthy, energy efficient building.
